Gar Mahood: Neil was a public health giant
Neil Collishaw was a bright star in the field of public health. His contributions from Health Canada to the World Health Organization to Physicians for a Smoke-Free Canada have improved and continue to improve the health of millions in Canada and around the world.
His knowledge of the tobacco issue and his research ability made him a valuable resource for the development of health policy, for the preparation of legislation, and for success in litigation to curb the destructiveness of the tobacco industry. His public health legacy will be nothing short of spectacular.
I hope Neil was proud of the hundreds of thousands of tobacco industry-caused deaths that, I would argue, will be prevented over time. He was an international public health hero. We can all be proud that he was a Canadian.
