Friends & family, Tobacco control

Alan Lopez: No greater legacy

Neil and I worked together on tobacco control at WHO during the 1990s. He was a wonderful colleague and friend; determined, competent and effective. Someone admired and respected by all who knew him. We made a great team; Richard Peto and I added up the numbers and Neil used them to extraordinary effect to influence and lead numerous global tobacco control initiatives. Millions of smokers gave up and avoided a premature death, going on to live longer and healthier lives as a result, thanks to his (and his colleagues) efforts.
He made an extraordinary contribution to improving global health. He will be greatly missed.
My condolences to Barbara and his family.
